The challenge
Dual workflows are expensive. Not always in dollars, but in time, consistency, and risk.
This health system first launched Ignite on FHIR in July 2021 as its single workflow for patient education. Provider pushback followed, and the organization reinstated its legacy "clinical references" process. What was meant to be temporary lasted more than three years.
Running both systems side by side offered flexibility. It also came at a cost:
- Extra work for IT teams maintaining two processes
- Greater risk of outdated or unvetted custom content
- Delays getting newly released education into providers' hands
Then leadership changed. A new VP of Integrated Services arrived with a clear mandate: optimize the technology and resources already in place. The goal was to eliminate redundant processes, standardize education, and drive adoption of centrally managed, real-time delivery.
When time is critical: FHIR
Emergency departments are hard places to introduce new workflows. Providers need tools that are fast and intuitive — anything that adds clicks slows care.
So when this system's ED team hesitated, they worked with WebMD Ignite to:
- Switch to a sidebar view in Epic for easier navigation
- Adjust default filters so relevant education surfaced automatically
- Enhance the user experience to reduce extra clicks
The result: faster adoption in one of the most demanding clinical settings, and proof that FHIR works even where every second counts.
